If the fields are set to allow blank values, then you will most likely get a validation error unless you re-add the xsi:nil attribute after setting them to blank.

Could you show us the rule logic (particularly the formulas) you're using to copy the data over?

You can accomplish this without a separate field if you add a condition to your rule: Condition: (the field) does not contain sec Action: Set (the field) to the formula: concat(., ' sec')

I ran into this same problem just a few hours ago.  I could un-bold the text, but couldn't change the italics in the slightest. I resorted to adding a separate layout table above the repeating table with the same number of columns, but when I tried it again just now, I found that if you click some non-italic text, click the Format ...

I believe the pattern you're looking for is this: \d\d/\d\d/\d\d\d\d That will ensure that the value is 2 digits, then a slash, 2 more digits, another slash, and then 4 more digits.  This means that something like 33/45/6789 would still be treated as valid, but I think that's about the best you can do in this situation.  ...
