Hi Valtteri,
We have customers today with hundreds of thousands of forms stored in SQL via DBXL. Our forms hosting service, which we are launching this summer, will have millions of forms, all stored in SQL via DBXL.

Hi,
You can convert all lower case letters to uppercase letters by using translate function.
translate(., "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz", "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ")

Oh, so are we talking about offline form usage? I had not seen that mentioned. That is a major piece of info in this discussion...
What IS your secondary data source exactly?
Is it set to store the data in the form for offline use?

Qdabra DBXL stores the original InfoPath XML in its own database. It is a one-way operation if you choose to shred the xml to a database. Shredding to a database and submitting to SharePoint are optional and can be made conditional (using xpath query syntax), so only XML that meets your requirements are written to those destinations.

I asked, Which is the master location of the data in DBXL solutions -XML or SQL? ...or is it two-way integration?

That link you reference is the way to update a separate list item directly. To do it indirectly, use ...

This is a common error when using this web service, especially in browser forms. One thing to know is that leveraging a web service in a browser form is essentially a double-hop of credentials. It's only one-hop when using the rich client.
Since the error doesn't give specifics, you have to check several things. First ...
