Your changes would probably work in the rich client, but browser forms are a different beast.  Forms Services converts the form into ASP.NET code, and things don't get converted 100% exact.

Are your users connecting from machines on the same domain? Are your users logged into their machine with the same account they use in SharePoint? Is the data connection converted to a UDC file?
