HI Hilary, and thanks very much for coming back to me, I am still having a problem, but have realised I've over-complicated aspects of the question, have actually got half of the thing working, and really am now stuck on just one aspect.
It boils down to can you use a 'Set a field's value' Action in a Rule to take the value ...

I've not tried this before - you should probably start by looking at the ULS logs to see if there is more helpful info there.

The only answer I know is to manually clean this up, I'm afraid. I've had issues with this too on servers with forms with code / qRules.

Sorry I am slow in replying to this - can you attach a copy of your form under the options tab if you still need help?

Hi Hilary,
First off, let me say - HAT'S OFF TO YOU! I don't know HOW in the world you make the time to help so many people such as myself, but I want to sincerely THANK YOU for your help - and willingness to do so! I would NOT be able to pull this off without you.
Second, I don't know HOW or WHY, but I did not receive a ...

So - the tricky part here is that you can't copy repeating data out of the box in InfoPath. You have to use code and if this is a list form, you can't do that. Creating a PDF is a great option - but that will likely involve third party tools like Muhimbi.
