You can put character limits on fields in properties.
I was thinking you were breaking it up to get around the default limits with basic SQL connectivity. With web services you do not have that limit.
You can take a lot of data with an Nvarchar(Max) vs an Ntext.
If you need help or want to see an example of how I do it just let me know.

I am not sure how you could validate a field. There is no universal language check but...
What if you checked for any English letter?
Does not contain any a-z
That could work if you are using kanji characters maybe.

The XSN is the template, not the data.
If you complete a form and submit it to a form library or save it, that would be the XML. They could then open this with a text editor, I guess, but this is not a practical scenario.

I have done some work with programtically attaching files.
Taking email attachments and attaching them to an InfoPath form.
It has been awhile but I would place the file in the same location each time and then the form would grab the attachment from there on load.

You are wanting to merge all of your forms? Or is this a choice within a form? I am not aware of a select all in SharePoint for this. Frankly I have not seen merge really used effectively for a number of reasons.
Typically if you want to report on or aggregate all of the data from your forms you need to collect it in a backend database. That ...
