Have you tried to set the opposite rule? I mean set another rule at the same place as the first one, but the opposite of it.
If the result of Total is less than 1 OR greater than 5, untick the chekbox

I discovered why you were unable to attach the form - because it's large, over 34MB in size. I received your 7 emails with each of the files, but when I try to open the form, it crashes InfoPath.

With the repeating tables I can easily format it like the example I attached, put in the Pass/Fail radio buttons, put in both sections, and the show/hide checkbox.
