Is this the default submit behavior? Maybe you need to use the Submit() method off the XDocument object:
thisXDocument.Submit();

Glad to hear you got it working!

IXMLDOMNodeList nodes = thisXDocument.DOM.selectNodes("//*"); // Note: this XPath only accounts for elements, and not attributes.
foreach(IXMLDOMNode node in nodes)
{
string val = node.text;
// do whatever you want with the text value here.
}

Take a look at some of these blog posts -- they use fitlers and can give you walkthroughs to help figure it out:

You can use C# with InfoPath 2003. You will need: Visual Studio (Express edition should work), and the InfoPath 2003 Toolkit for Visual Studio .NET (see the InfoPathDev.com homepage for links).
There are different toolkits depending on which version of Visual Studio you are running. I think the homepage link is expecing 2003 and not 2005.

There is an XDocuments collection which can give one form access to another open form's DOM to make selections, copies, edits, etc.

SetNamedNodeProperty() is being used incorrectly.
The parameters are: (NodeToWhichThePropertyWillBeSet, NameOfProperty, ValueOfProperty)
You are placing an XPath in the second parameter which is not a valid property name. The first parameter needs to be a valid node.

Rules allow you to have conditions. The set of actions will only apply if the condition is met. This might be part of what you need to solve your issue.
The other thing you might not have considered is that when Z changes, your rules on X will not be fired. You will need to have a rules on X *and* Z to get rules to fire in both situations.
