I don't believe so.  InfoPath only responds to field changes once the focus leaves the field.

I'm publishing to the Sharepoint site. I was able to resolve the problem by changing it from a place holder to default value and re-adding the fields with merge selected from within Infopath design.

Out of the box this is a filler only feature offered by InfoPath.  Unfortunately I'm not familiar with another way you can accomplish this in the browser.
