You need to just requery the data connection where you are getting the new ID from. So - I am not sure which data connections you are requerying, but it needs to be the one to the library you just submitted to. Drag the data fields onto your form so you can see if the new item that you just submitted is there.

You need to requery the data connection. If your data connection to get the library items runs on load, the data you just submitted won't be in it - you need to query the library again after submitting to get back the just-submitted item.

When do you query for the data?

Feel free to attach a copy of your form under the options tab in a reply if you'd like me to take a look. :)

So - when you export to Excel the prior version's "next steps" text shows? Maybe in the form you could add a rule on submit that if next steps is blank it gets set to N/A instead of blank? Not sure if that will work - this isn't a scenario I've run into before.

So - you would need to first submit the form, then query for the data for this form, then you would have the ID. When you set up a library data connection to query data in a form, you have the option to query for data "for this form only" but I suspect that only works when the form is being opened from the library. Might be worth ...

Also the same fields / controls aren't present? There are sometimes issues with rendering in InfoPath Forms Services (the browser piece), and usually ...

Ah, now I understand. Yes, 2013 includes two separate pieces, filler and designer. How do you currently install just Filler? I've not had to do that myself, so I'm not sure if the same approach would work with 2013, but it seems like it should be reasonably simple to test on a VM or test machine?

Ah hah! Now I understand. In your list, you need to turn on versioning. Then you need a multi-line field with "append changes" selected - see attached. :)
