Ok, great. This means that if you create a data connection to retrieve data via Active Directory, you'll have all of the user's active directory properties available in the secondary data source. Within that set of data, are you getting a user role, department or something similar?

I have done what you propose; that is, storing both the ID and the display name in the form, and promote the display name as the column in the form library.
You might also try having the column defined as Managed Metadata. (Screenshot attached.) Perhaps this enables SharePoint to treat this like a lookup column? I haven't tried myself, but ...

The logic sounds like it should work, except that instead of contains you should be using equals. Is the multi-select control using the same source field for both Display and Value? Perhaps there's a problem with the capitalization?
