Does the error not make sense? You have to use managed code in browser forms - no script.
You can't create a new form from a template that doesn't work.

I copy controls all the time in order to keep the settings. What do you mean when you say "it loses properties and rules along the way"? I even copy controls and change the binding to a new field just to not have to re-do all the settings. The things that don't carry over are the things that are specific to the ...

I guess the key is that you aren't touching Active Directory, but rather the profile database in SharePoint, and you have to use the UserProfileService (only in MOSS) to get the info you need. The Qdabra ADWS actually does connect directly to AD, so it's great for not having SP at all or not having MOSS. It also has some ...

Don't try to get it from the list. SharePoint groups exist at the site collection level, and there are built-in web services like the one I mentioned (UserGroup.asmx, not my blog) that can enumerate these groups and their users. GetUserCollection or something like that - you can find this with a quick search.
As for the AD part, ...

You can use a Page Viewer web part or the XMLFormView web part, but you wouldn't be clicking "new" from the regular library itself unless you edited that page to include one of these web parts. It's still going to be opened in the browser, but the "browser" will be contained within a web part so as not to take up ...
