To prevent the control from showing at all, you can create a section control that's bound to the same field as the new control, and then place the control and any label text it has inside the section.

Well, the gaps were gone in the InfoPath preview, but when I choose the option to use it in a web browser instead of InfoPath Filler the gaps are back but each only 1 pixel instead of one for each hidden section. Also, 3pt borders in some places display as they should and most other places they have a gap so it's 1pt black on both sides of a ...
