Where you are getting empty entries in your dropdown list? If it is in starting then you have to change the code as below before adding the nodes.
Delete all child nodes for below node,

In your code you are not initializing for ‘xmlDoc' variable. Just you declared as variable without initializing any value. As per the code ‘xmlDoc' is null then we much not able execute next step is ‘xmlDoc.DocumentElement' property.

If you attach the files with large size to an attachment, InfoPath automatically gives a warning popup with the message is ‘You have chosen a large file, which will affect the form performance ....'. May be your form is timed out when you adding the large file.
