If you're using InfoPath 2010, you can add a Form Load rule by going to the Data tab and clicking the Form Load button. Here you can add a rule just like any other rule, to set this field's value. If you give it the condition [MonthField is blank], then it will only set the field the first time the form is opened.

It looks like this space is originating from the space in "; ". The substring is stripping off the leading semicolon, but not the space. To fix this, simply change the 2 to a 3.

Thanks for the reply. I currently don't run the Max(ID) until submission, but the problem is still occurring due to server response times and the number of users. If one person's submission gets delayed, the next one being submitted (close to the same time) reads the same sharepoint ID for the formula.
