Set the default value of the destination field to the following XPath formula (making the appropriate modifications), but don't check "Update this value when the result of the formula is recalculated." This will set that destination node to the appropriate value when the form ...

This has nothing to do with the complexity of your schema. InfoPath will not allow you to modify the data source because it is obeying the schema and the schema does not leave any room for modification.
When there are changes to the schema you're using as your main data source, you can use Tools->Convert Main Data Source... to update ...

You can track changes to the assignedTo field by placing an OnAfterChange event handler on that node, but there is a bit of a catch because from the event handler's perspective a row insertion looks exactly like a user's value modification so we have to be a little tricky. I suggest the following.
Add a new node my:ignoreInserts ...

With regard to your second question (deleting rows), you can place a button in the repeating table that will handle deletion. The button's event handler will look something like this:
Sub CTRL5_5_OnClick(eventObj)
' Write your code here
End Sub
eventObj.Source is a reference to the node in the repeating group ...

When you insert a new row into the table, the row is added to the end of the table, right?
If so, you should be able to use
XDocument.DOM.selectSingleNode("/dfs:myFields/dfs:dataFields/d:q_inflow_entry[last()]")
to access the last row.

I think I've resolved this issue over private message with Geoffrey. The issue was that results were coming back from the database, but the code to copy them to the main data source wasn't finding them. It looks like this line was the problem:
foreach (XPathNavigator resultsRow1 in ...

I was able to work up a JScript version.
As set up, you need to do the following:
Find this line at the top of the script (it will be slightly different in your script)
XDocument.DOM.setProperty("SelectionNamespaces", 'xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" ...[remainder abbreviated]');
copy out ...

Hello again,
I've taken a look at your form. I'm not sure how much can be easily done to speed up the form. I'm guessing it takes so long to load up because it has to perform hundreds of calculations before the form is even displayed. I think the form's data source could have a much simpler structure and ...

Ok, thank you, but on this problematic view specifically, how are the calculations being performed, in InfoPath terms? That is, how is it multiplying (number of rooms) by (square footage) to determine (total area), how is it summing those areas to arrive at total net area? Is it using rules? code? If so, where and when? What are ...
