Yes, you should be able to use the following formula to count the number of line breaks in a field:string-length(field) - string-length(translate(field, lineBreak, ""))
-
To set values in rows right at the time a row is added, you can place the rules on the repeating group itself. Is that what you are looking to do?
-
Could you tell us specifically which tutorial you are referring to?
-
The general idea and formula would be to create a calculated value control in table 2 and give it a formula like this:firstTableGroup[count(preceding-sibling::firstTableGroup) = count(current()/preceding-sibling::secondTableGroup)]/fieldName Could you give that a try? If you get stuck, please provide a screenshot of your data source ...

So in other words the criterion that the Cs should appear in separate rows of the second table in the same order as the rows of the first table?
-
What's the criterion for which Cs appear in which rows of the second table?
-
To the best of my knowledge, it's only possible to change other fields' values once a field has lost focus (i.e., by tabbing or clicking out, etc.). Even the BeforeChange and Changing events run after a control loses focus.

Are you doing calculations within each row, or are you calculating a value to total all the rows? Are value a and b fields within the rows or are they constant values?
-
Yes, the formula in the previous post was just an example because I didn't know the actual field names. Now that I do, I believe the formula would be:sum(/my:myFields/my:Itemized_Expenses/my:Receipt_Description[my:Pmt_Method = "PCC" or my:Pmt_Method = "CASH"]/my:Amount)
-
The image you added seems to be broken, but I think a formula like this should do the trick:
sum(repeatingRow[my:pmtMethod = "PCC" or my:pmtMethod = "CASH"]/my:cost)
