Yes, you're right, the solution fails for a large number of fields.
The alternative is to write code that does this. I'd propose you give qRules a shot if you'd rather stay away from writing code. The command DelimitedList will let you accomplish this via rules quite easily. You can learn more about qRules here.

I imagine that rules could achieve this codelessly, but you would need a lot of rules and conditions. For example:
Rule #1
Condition: Field1 is not blank, Field2 is blank, Field3 is blank, Field4 is blank
Action: target field = Field1
Rule #2
Condition: Field1 is not blank, Field2 is not blank, Field3 is blank, Field4 is blank
Action: target ...

You will need to add ALL controls to the third view. Then hide or show them via conditional formatting, i.e. Hide if the field is blank.
Good luck!

Can you attach a screenshot of the conditional formatting window using the Options tab when you reply? Thanks

Yes, you need to look at the properties of the tables and sections to be able to modify their height.
In the properties you can also look at the row height and set it to Automatic.
-
Are these sections within a layout table? If so, then check the height of the layout table.
If not, then check for additional line breaks between each section (before and after Section 3). Those will not be "hidden" when Section 3 is hidden.
-
You can right click on the controls and check their properties. Sometimes the height property is the problem.
Also check for blank lines breaks with no text in them.

I would refer you to step by step online tutorials for InfoPath beginners. Here is one I found via Google: http://bytelab.blogspot.com/2008/06/submit-infopath-forms-to-sharepoint.html
Good luck!

The problem is that you are re-setting the filename everything someone submits, so this triggers a new filename everytime. The filename should only be set once if you wish to allow overwrites.
Just add a field to your schema (my:filename) and have a rule that sets its value if the field is blank. This means that the rule will only execute when ...

A pop up will require that you write code.
A simpler option is to have a hidden section with help text. The section is hidden by default when the form opens. When the user clicks the button the section is shown.
Good luck!
