Hey Aaron.
Unfortunately you cannot query Sharepoint. You have to load all of the data, which will come from your default view, and then do a filter or sort once it is in your form. So you can get what you want in the end but the performance is not good, especially if the list is large.
I use SQL and Web Services so that I can query ...

I am not that familiar with SPD but is the history recorded in SharePoint where you can see it?
If it is in Sharepoint you should be able to access it.
Or is there a way to build a list with the data and then have your form connect to the list.

Have you trouble shot each field.
I would drag each one to your view and then test checking each fiald and verify the the conditions are being met for each component.
Typically and and or an or is incorrect. You just have to break it down and verify each peice.

In Hyperlink control properties, if each is a seperate field in the secondary data, then you should be able to set one as the vale and one as the label.
Another trick is to use a substring function to remove the extra.
substring-before(link, %)

In InfoPath you can break the form into views or sections. That allows the form tobe in more managable parts.
For what yoiu want add the controls to sections and then add a check box or make a button, remove the border and make the text underline. Have it set a field to true.
Then have conditional formatting on the section which ...

You coulde have a validate field by column or section.
Then just check your validate fields on submit.
