Troy Sorry my misunderstanding.  Create a new field on the form and set that to equal the data from the database.  Then set your drop-down's default value to equal the substring of the new field.   That should work fine. Adam

So you are saying the preview function does not work at all regardless whether data is present or not. This is not normal and suggests your version is corrupted somehow, are you running a Beta?  Best advice is to un-install Infopath 2007 and re-install it, see if that helps. Adam
