Hi Stuart,
Yes, you can add Readers and Writers for all document types. You saw this in the installer but you can modify this in web.config.

Thanks for the additional info. In the error log I see reference to htps://mysite:443/sites/hr/_vti_bin/lists.asmx. In the error returned by qRules, we get https://mysite/sites/hr/_vti_bin/lists.asmx.
Are you able to open that URL in Internet Explorer? Can you try to see if there is a different with / without the :443 when opening the URL in IE? ...

If you right click on the button that calls qRules, and then select "Properties" you should be able to look at the Postback settings. What are these set to?

When a command executes it ...

When you launch the InfoPath designer there is an option to create a new Database form (under Advanced Form Templates). Have you tried that?

How is the form being sent? Via email? If so, I believe InfoPath sends the active view, in which case the other buttons might not be displayed. You'll need to set up rules that modify the view before sending the email.

What you're proposing sounds impossible to me, at least without code.
As an alternative, you could:
1. Query to get a list of the xmls stored in the form library.
2. Sort them.
3. Add a link in your form that will open the previous one
4. Add a link in your form that will open the "next" one.
Of course, these are links, ...
