What code are you using to read an element and/or attribute? It could be the method you are using is incorrect.

#1 - Expression boxes are not storable values. They are only for display. If you want to store a value you must use a text box. You can create a default value formula in your text box to have the same calculation as your expression box.
#2 - InfoPath 2007 provides a drop-down control that allows users to type in values not present in the list. If ...

Glad to have been of help!

Again, the key here is to do something similar outside of a preserve code block first and then look at the resulting XSL. It will show you exactly the kinds of structures you need in order to call from primary to secondary and back. Then you can manually work the code in the preserve code block to match.

I believe that Stavi is correct. If you want multiple top level tables, you'll need to write a Web service to do that. The database connector in InfoPath just won't let you do that so far as I've been able to figure out.

Its the mysteries of programming. Why something doesn't work until you try to show someone, or works one time and not another.
There's probably a valid reason for it, but alas, I have not further insights for you on this.
I'm glad its working now!

Two things: 1) namespace prefixes, 2) attribute vs node
You left off the necessary namespace prefix and did not account for an attribute in your xpath... I'm not positive what your prefix will be, but likely it's ''dfs:''. Try this:
not(. = ../preceding-sibling::dfs:Form_Data/@Category)

If the field is ''bound'' to the secondary data source (the web service dom) then the field should update. If, however, the field is bound to the main dom, then that is why its not being updated.

Sounds like for some reason the data connection that feeds the value/display name pairs to the drop-down list box control is not being connected to when the user opens the form from email.
