This could be done using code and an intermediate storage facility. You will have your original fields in one set of data and then use code to grab the the last n characters from the fields and write them into a new table. Then populate your drop-down with this ''converted'' table.
Hope this helps!

If you are passing in a customer parameter you will need to use a simple web page. Check out this tutorial:

What language are you using? That does not look familiar.
Using JScript, this should be able to be accomplished like this:
var parentGroup = XDocument.DOM.selectNodes( ''//childNodes'' );
var oneSampleNode = parentGroup.nextNode();
parentGroup.appendChild( oneSampleNode.cloneNode( false ) );

Your best bet would be to create a new view in InfoPath and then edit the generated XSL with an outside editor. Try this:
1. Create a new view - name it ''Custom''
2. Export form files by File -> Export Form Files
3. Open the folder that you extracted things to
4. Open the Custom.xsl file in your outside editor, make changes, save, and ...

Also, you can just do this:
if( Node )
{
// node is not null
}

You'll have to do something like this:
IXMLDOMNode newField = blabla.cloneNode( false );
newField.text = ''xxx'';
IXMLDOMNode groupNode = thisXDocument.dom.selectSingleNode( ''XPath/to/containingGroupNode'' );
groupeNode.appendChild( newField );

Yes, probably, you just need to edit the ''header'' of the XSL file to make sure that InfoPath recognizes it as a ''view''. Also, you might have to hack a coupel other files such as the manifest.xsf.

Hm, great question! Haven't heard of this being done. What kind of data are your loading from the Web service? Database query? Images? XML data?
You could probably split whatever it is you're loading into a couple of pieces (say, 10) and then after you load each piece update the progress bar (10% each time). Another option would be to load a ...

Hm, I would stick with conditional formatting. If you wanted to do it with code, you could set the conditional formatting to hide the control when a certain field is a certain value and then set the value with code.
Maybe xdExtension would be better, but I've never worked with it and I know conditional formatting using a helper node is pretty ...
