This is a list form? I think I'd probably just add a helper field, true/false, that is set to true once the status has been selected, and then add a custom validation rule on the status field that if the field is blank, and the helper field is true, there is a validation error. Does that make sense?

Don't use the command in that formula. Add a rule to your qRules Link field with the condition that the field value contains spaces - if it does then use the encode command to encode the value and set the field to the result.

I am kicking myself. I just ran Rule Inspector and saw a rule was causing my problems all along. I delete the rule and the check box now works as expected.
