InfoPath doesn't provide any codeless way of doing this, but using Qdabra's qRules in your form allows you to do this easily without writing any of your own code. Why not give the free trial version a go?

Rule:
Condition: substring(today(), 6, 2) = 1
Year = substring(today(), 1, 4) - 1
Month = 12
Condition: substring(today(), 6, 2) != 1
Year = substring(today(), 1, 4)
Month = substring(today(), 6, 2) - 1
Or without conditions:
Year = substring(today(), 1, 4) - (substring(today(), 6, 2) = 1)
Month = substring(today(), 6, 2) - 1 ...

I'm a bit confused that this is happening. Is this PreferredName value coming from a field in the form, or is it something you're manually entering into rule conditions.
If you display the SharePoint data in a repeating table in your form, does the O'Donnel name show up correctly, or does it display as O'Donnel?

If you query for these documents in the Documents tab of DAT, is the Name field blank there as well?

Have you ensured that you are actually saving the files with utf-8 encoding?

How about putting the hyperlink in its own Section control and hiding it as necessary?

In IP 2007, the default values dialog you need is in Tools->Form Options...->Advanced->Edit Default Values...
Note you can only do this for the main data source, not a secondary data source.

I think it would be wiser to keep the true/false values on your checkboxes, and put rules on them to set a separate field to the value you want, accordingly. That way you don't have to incorporate those text values (which might yet change again) into your logic conditions. And if

You have a comma between the last pair of quotes, but there shouldn't be anything between them.
