Controls are bound to data fields. Deleting controls does not delete a data field. You would still have your data field with its value. Why not use 'Save As' and save a copy of your form, then try deleting the column from the table on your form and seeing if it still all works?

Oh, and I should have been more clear -- when you create a connection to SQL, you can actually edit the SQL to something like "exec dbo.mystoredprocedure etc" and then change the command in code to pass in your parameters from your form. But creating a data source this way prevents you from having to make your form full trust.

You create a data source in InfoPath by adding a secondary data connection to your form. You can find links to help with activity here.

The field needs to remain in the group in your data source, but you don't have to have a control bound to the field in your form. You can delete the column from the repeating table on the form entirely -- the data field will still exist in your data source.

Or can you return all the data from the SQL table and use XPath filtering to get the correct value to populate the different fields? If you need a filtered query, our web services do that. There may be a clever work around to this limitation that I don't know about. However, can you simply add an expression box or section that will show or hide depending upon the same condition you would use for the message box.
