Where are these rules running? On a field inside the repeating group? Feel free to send me your form (with some information on where to look for these things) in an email if you'd like and I can take a look.

As far as I've ever seen when I add a control like a textbox, InfoPath automatically adds a field (with a generic name like "field1", "field3" etc) to the main data source. I don't think it is possible to add an unbound text box? If it was, I wouldn't do it - binding is where the control stores its data, so there ...

In the heading of my post there is a link to a form. Right click the link and select the option to save the file locally - the precise text will vary depending on your web browser. Save the file someplace on your computer that you can find it. Navigate using Windows Explorer to the saved file. Right click the saved file and select ...

Without seeing the form or any of the existing filled out XML I can't really guess. I do know that in general when it looks my rules aren't working, it is because something is not the value I think it is. Perhaps put all the fields you are using on your form where you can see them and then walk through it with an existing form again and ...

The post formatting is awful, right? The forum runs on pretty old software and you'll have better luck if you use Internet Explorer to post. The first thing to check would be if your form is set to update existing XML - it could be the form is set to "do nothing" so your new fields aren't getting added to existing forms. That is ...

Sure - you can add a form load rule and a helper field for this. In the form load rules, set the helper field to the value of the form when it was opened. Does that make sense?

So - if your dropdowns are in a repeating section, it is probably best to just query for all the data (as long as it doesn't impact load times for the form or cause other issues because the data load is huge). That's because if you requery the data source for the initial dropdown on each selection, you could end up with no data available ...

It would be helpful to see a copy of your form. Can you attach it to a reply under the Option tab?

Did someone else change the form? Can you see where else the data connection may be used? Can you attach a copy of your form under the Options tab in a reply and I can take a quick look at it for you?

Validation won't apply till the user changes focus, I think. So they actually have to tab out - you won't be able to literally stop them from entering more chars, like the character limit does on plain text fields. Here's a sample with data validation - save locally, right click and select design, preview.
