I've tried all the things that I have seen posted for filtering data into unique values and the one thing that I see is no metion of an external data source like from share point or from SQL.

I have a field which I have added some data validation to, however, when I preview the form the red asterisk appears in the text field. The field is not required but if the user fills it in I am trying to control the data that is submitted to the DB. Is there a way to use the validation without getting the red asterisk?
Thanks

Hi,
Why don't you build you own VB6 Active X control? You just need your own wrapper around the MS control to make it safe for scripting and allow you to add it to InfoPath as a custom control.
Just a thought...
