You sound like you are already on the right track - what you are describing should be doable via the built in Infopath rules gui/interface - I doubt you would even need to manually write any xpath.
e.g. sharepoint table 1 with leave entitlements
ID leaveEntitlement
0 250 hrs
1 102 hrs
sharepoint table 2 with user names
ID name
0 ...

my knee-jerk (politely called 'intuitive') response is to try double slash. // or \\ instead or even \/ or /\. This might sound strange, but in jScript a / (or is it a \) is a 'special character', so when you want a slash to be interpreted, you need double slash....
Just give each combination a try and see if it works, ...

Yes, thats sounds like something that could work. It's almost like having a user register at a web forum before posting. But it might be an extra step they are unwilling to have to take to use your forms.
Could be a privacy issue too? What if they just start putting in colleagues details to retrieve their info! Or save incorrect details?

Have you used secondary datasources for the drop down list of ships?
Use a similar method (or read up on secondary datasources) to retrieve the details of the selected ship from another secondary datasource using the selected ship field as the filter and copy those values into your main datasource fields as required.

on the conditional formatting to hide of the button you will need some conditions.
repeating table is called my:repeatTable
original/corrected field is called my:origOrCorr
original hours is called my:origHours
corrected hours is called my:corrHours
The conditions you want are expressions with OR logic.
count(//my:repeatTable[my:origOrCorr = ...

Have you got any rules on the field that might modify the contents in any way?
I unfortunately don't have a solution, but across many applications I occassionally see an issue where rich text formatted paragraphs get the carriage returns interpreted in different ways.
Some seem to strip the 'hidden characters' which make a ...

I modified this from somewhere - most likely an example form InfopathDev or Microsoft sample/example site.
It's extra long to make sure it would fit any of my forms - and I couldn't use tile because then I couldn't have the 'top' of the image.
It's intended for A4 forms oriented to the left of the view - table with of 630 ...

Can you delete the part of the path that you don't need and replace it with s:\ before you press the finish/publish button?

hmmmm tricky tricky...I wonder if you could put a 'page break' in a normal section with conditional formatting inside one of the repeating table cells. Then conditional formatting would be to make it visible only for certain position #'s of the current row.
I'll see if that works and post back (feel free to try it yourself ...

repeating table: my:repeatGroup
yes/no field: my:yesNo
xPath to count: count(//my:repeatGroup[my:yesNo = 'yes'])
