Thanks for the quick response.  The reason why I want to have a separate .NET program to check the certificate is  to avoid (although unlikely) a user creates his own InfoPath form to retrieve data.

A dumb-ish question: if I have code-behind in InfoPath 2003 do I need to publish it via the Form server or is it just optional?  I did a little bit of publishing InfoPath form on the SharePoint side and deployment is quite different with code-behind. In this case the InfoPath form does not need to be published on SharePoint.  ...

I have a browser enabled form which supposes to connect to a secondary data source (web service).
