I have used Nintex, you are correct, this product is not free. Nintex does provide many more options for complex workflows than those built into SharePoint. Knowledge of webservices and xml prior to using this product would be extremely helpful. That being said, rules in InfoPath or if you are using SharePoint 2010, Visio, would be a better option, in my opinion.

None of these, K2 BlackPearl or Nintex are free. They have free demos. Has anyone used them , are these demos enough to try out whatever U want to test and Any idea how much these cost, if one wants to buy them after the demo thanks

We just use InfoPath rules. They work fine for 90% of the cases.

We have heard very positive reviews of K2 Blackpearl and Nintex.

SharePoint workflows are also very improved in 2010.
