I don't know of any way to make a selection show one thing but contain the value of another - example: show component name but the vaue of the form field = componentID.

Since doing this it is all good and my heirachical drop downs work.

However, please look at my other problem in this forum - I cannot get the form to format a text field which is pulled in from this acces database. In access it has paragraph breaks but they disappear in InfoPath. I have tried text field and rich text field with paragraph breaks turned on.

Please help! Thank you
Re: Heirachical drop down list from mdb

I appear to have been a bit of a muppet!

Because it is a database, the relationship is based upon the primary and foreign key.

If a drop down box of a "FORM" field uses the data from a field in a database table, will it automatically know what the primary key vaule is if I use it to filter the drop down list of the second drop down list by using current()dataFields/Tbl_Component/@ComponentID or do I need a second form field to lookup what the value is?

I want to display the value of the fields in drop down lists based upon invisible primary and foreign keys. Do I need related form fields to o this?
Heirachical drop down list from mdb

Hi all,

I hope you're all well.

I have created a form which has a data connection with a database which has a string or connecting tables.

It's a knowledge base - I want to create a form which filters through this using drop down lists.

The tables are as follows - there will also be added on symptoms and then resolutions as well. (please excuse the formatting)

Component______Brand________Package_______Module_____Problem Type
.
Software App____Microsoft_____Office 2003____Access______Feature Change
_____________________________________________________Performance Issue
_____________________________________________________Error Message

I have created a form which uses an mdb file created in Access which has already got data in it about different issues.

I am using this as a secondary source of info.

I have created some fields

ProblemSource - looks up from Component from the mdb
ProblemPackage  - filtered from current()/dataFields/Tbl_Component/@Component
ProblemModule - filtered from above and current()/dataFields/Tbl_Packages/@Package
ProblemType - and so on

It doesn't work though - the filtering. My second fied is blank unless I turn filtering off and I have copied and pasted the details of the field name from one field's source into the next fields filter. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
