It would be better if I could poll AD directly, rather than depend on SharePoint. Don't know how I can do this with declarative logic in rules without Qdabra's Active Directory utility or DBXL.

GetUserProfileByName not giving consistent results

Hi, everybody. I'm currently constructing a series of forms that uses the web service GetUserProfileByName via a data connection. I'm calling UserProfileService.asmx in the data connection in InfoPath 2010, connecting with a form library on SharePoint 2010, then using GetUserProfileByName to retrieve the current user's preferred name, manager ID, and department as defined in Active Directory. These values prepopulate various fields on the respective forms, and, in some cases, replace the Account field value with the manager's ID to do another query for the manager's preferred name.

The problem I'm having, and I just noticed this recently, is this method works for some of our user base, but not all. In our organization the user ID in Active Directory is a 6 character string. I can use that ID in an AD utility and get the expected results, but not always using GetUserProfileByName.

Is there another method that might be more reliable to get the same data without having to write a bunch of code? Thanks in advance.
