Another way is here.

http://claytoncobb.wordpress.com/2009/06/20/auto-generating-filenames-for-infopath-forms/

I ended up doing this, storing the filename in a variable, and using that to check whether or not this is an edit or a new submit.

Thanks

I think I actually want the opposite of what you are describing - I need users to be able to create a new form (using Submit) and then be able to click from Sharepoint and save it many times. Once created, it seems I need to disable Submit. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks!

In the first click you submitted, in the second click you saved.

You can go into your Form Options and deactivate the option to Save / Save As. There may also be a setting in the submit button ("Close without prompt"). These modified settings will force users to only Submit, and avoid duplicates.

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

Submit creates duplicate (two) records

I am designing a form in Infopath 2007 to connect to a form library in Sharepoint 2007. It should open up in the client Infopath application as I have other things in the form that are not compatible with browser. I am publishing the form as a content type on the Sharepoint site.

The submit data connection uses now() as the file name, and the "Allow Overwrite if file exists" box is checked.

From Sharepoint I go to New, then MyForm (content type name), which opens Infopath, then fill out the form and press submit (the form is using the standard submit button in the tool bar, with no custom stuff, tied to the data connection above). I get the message The form was submitted successfully. A new record is created in the Sharepoint form library with the date time as the name. Excellent.

I click on the form that was just added and open it up in Infopath. I make a change, and press Submit. I see a save box flash by looking like it is saving, then the message The form was submitted successfully. I press OK, then another dialog box "Do you want to save the changes to <original date time>.xml? I say Yes. Back in the Sharepoint form library, there are now two duplicate identical records.

Any ideas why two records are created? Thanks in advance for your help!
