MOSS 2007 Enterprise 2 server setup, one WFE and one SQL box
SQL 2005
Windows Server 2003
InfoPath

In this app a user logs on to a code generated SharePoint looking site using forms based authentication (I will call this the top part). This site is running off a database separate from the stock SharePoint content DB and has a different site URL than the underlying SharePoint site that holds the two InfoPath templates (this will be called the bottom part).

The users can generate forms from this top site and in their creation they must interact at some level with the bottom site that holds the templates during the actual InfoPath form creation process. For this reason all members of this application have to be entered both in a users database for the top part, and the SharePoint Site on the bottom part.

This whole setup worked fine until we did two things. One we relocated the servers, and two we updated SharePoint with SP2.

Now what we are seeing is everyone including myself can sign into the top, fill out a web form, but when the button is clicked to generate a new InfoPath form they get dunned for authentication from the lower site then are shown a 404 error which is set as the default error in the webconfig file for this app.

Here is the webconfig info

<connectionStrings>
    <add name="HpoApp" connectionString="Data Source=bettcorpsql;Initial Catalog=BETTMOSS_LEPP;User ID=lepp_test;pwd=domain456!"/>
    <add name="ADConnection" connectionString="LDAP://ldap.hq.domainname.com:389" />
  </connectionStrings>

We have not changed who was in the groups in the underlying site and that is the address that shows up in the authentication notice.

We do not have the source code as this was written by a 3rd party vendor, but I don't think it is a code thing. I think some connection was broken when we moved or updated and if I can find where that is we will be back up. I just don't know where or what to start checking beyond what I have looked at so far.

I know this would be hard to troubleshoot in a post, I am certainly struggling with full access (to all but the design plan and source code that is), but does anyone have any ideas on what might be behind this sudden fussiness in the area of authentication?
