You should take a look at our Web Services Solution Pack (qWSSP), it makes connecting to SQL or SharePoint sources for querying data in InfoPath WAY easier than the built in connections in InfoPath. It works fine with IPFS too. authenication is managed via the webservice.

I just ideally don't want to have to resort to storing plain-text passwords in document libraries, although it's looking like that's my only option.

Authenticating Against SQL Server using UDC and NTLM

I've spent at least 8 hours so far trying to get an InfoPath form to authenticate against a SQL datasource. I've had to jump through countless hoops so far, discovering UDC files, obscure sharepoint configuration options and other unobvious requirements along the way. As soon as I resolve one obstacle, I'm presented with another. I've lost count of the number of different Exception Message's I've received in the sharepoint log. Enough ranting, here's what I'm trying to do.

I have a relatively simple InfoPath form, that pulls data from a SQL database. I want the logged in user credentials, to be used to authenticate against the SQL server. I'm using UDC and have enabled all the necessary configuration options to allow things such as cross-domain authentication and authenticating against data sources. I've since discovered that "Office Single Sign-On" is required to get this to work, but after looking into OSS, it seems it requires a SQL server to authenticate against. All I want to do, is have the data connection authenticate using the logged on user credentials, preferrably via NTLM. Why do I have to jump through so many hoops in order to achieve a relatively simple outcome?

Can someone advise the easiest method to connect to a SQL server from a InfoPath web form using the credentials of the logged on user.

Cheers
