thanks Hilary.

i have managed to do a workaround (i.e. set the field to a DEFAULT value to "today()" , but i'm worried, that if user goes in the form tomorrow and tries to amend their form they submitted ( i set in the Data connections - for the form to be able to be overwritten - as each user needs to submit only one form per month../ with Name in sharepoint to equal : Concatenate: field name: Period + Field name : that field that includes "today()" ) - from the day before that the system may not like it and not overwrite it becuase the date has changed ..... sorry if this is confusing... (a screenshot attached)..

If you want to hide a text box, you can put conditional formatting on it. For the first drop down, select The expression. In the text box after that drop down, clear out any content and type the number 1. Then select 'Hide this control'. This will always evaluate to true, thus the control will always hide.

One thing people sometimes struggle to understand about rules is that the field the rule is on needs to change for the rule to fire. So, if you want the file name field to default to today() if it is blank, you might want to consider setting that in an Open rule (under Tools / Form Options). Make sure you put a condition on it -- that file name should be blank!

i put in optional section with the hidden field , but the rule doesnt work. it doesnt bring back anything...

how do i just hide a Text Box (not in optional section...)??

how do i assign a unique name to filename only if filename is blank?? i added a rule on the field : condition : if the filename is blank, but dont know what the action should be...

do the same thing at the time of submit, submit using rules and before submittng if

filenametext box is empty set the value of filenametext box to someunique name

and use the same as filename.

i forgot to say i only have infopath 03 on this form. a unique name? i have a number of lawyers submitting forms for their performance each month. but i dont want them to fill in their name , as they have enough boxes to fill in. the only other box is month. is Unique name - under data connections options? thanks a lot.

hi Lenka,

this is possible, infact it is an easy one. follow these steps.

1) add a hidden textbox say filename.

2) on open and save write a rule to assign a unique name to filename only if filename is blank.

3) at submit time use the value in this field as actual filename to which the form will be submitted.

HI,

i want a user to only submit one item (form) ONLY per month, but to be able to go back to the same item to amend the content (without creating another copy of the form). is that possible , with using the SUBMIT button??
