The property promotion stuff only seems to be available if I publish to a SharePoint content type.

I thought maybe I could update the SharePoint content type then use "Convert Main Data Source" to update my InfoPath's data source fields (described here: http://blogs.msdn.com/infopath/archive/2004/05/03/125378.aspx), but I seem to be restricted from that option.

Chances are I just don't know something simple, but I am stuck until I learn more.

Re: Updating the Main Data Source (Partially) Based On Changes in SharePoint For Administrator Approved Form

Hi Boulder_bum and welcome to our forum!

Well, up until the last sentence, my response would have been "InfoPath property promotion supports chaging the names in the form - promoted names different from actual field names, so just change the names in the property promotion wizard and republish". Of course, this would require a republish, wihch you say you can't do. In addition, in the last line, you refer to "Convert Main Data Source" which utterly boggles my mind. What does that have to do with SharePoint property promotion? Answer should be: 0, zip, nada, but then, my IQ is not infinite number, so maybe I'm missing something. Please elaborate.

Updating the Main Data Source (Partially) Based On Changes in SharePoint For Administrator Approved Form

Okay, here's the situation I'm in and what I'm trying to accomplish.

First, I have an InfoPath form that I mapped to a content type when I first published it. In other words there are fields that don't necessarily share the same name, but are mapped accordingly:

Fields In My InfoPath Form

 Field In My Content Type

Cust_ID

 Customer ID

Field_X

 Field X

Y

 Z

...which I did by selecting to publish to a SharePoint site, where I "updated an existing content type" (mapped the fields).

Ordinarily, I can just repeat this process at will, but where it gets a little complicated is in the fact that I added code to the browser-based form which requires administrator approval and a different deployment strategy. In other words, I can no longer deploy and opt to "update an existing content type".

So how would I add "field Y" to the content type and InfoPath form so that they can stay in synch and/or be re-mapped? I can't seem to find a way in the InfoPath designer to accomplish the task, save for an option to "Convert Main Data Source" which produces a rather nasty schema to deal with (wierd nesting and auto-generated namespaces).

So anyway, is there a way to map the fields of my InfoPath form to a content type without the "Convert Main Data Source" and with the aparent limitation imposed on publishing with an administrator-approved form?
