Set InfoPath dropdown selected value...help, please.

I have created an InfoPath form from a SharePoint list. I am having trouble trying to programmatically (Javascript/JQuery) set the value of a dropdown list on in my InfoPath form. Please review the information below and any advice will be GREATLY appreciated.

Control ID/Name = ctl00_m_g_31a297ba_e524_4046_bbd9_9d8251f416ad_FormControl0

ID = variable that holds the index to set the dropdown list value to.

I have tried this line (among many others) but I the control in the InfoPath form is not setting.

$('#ctl00_m_g_31a297ba_e524_4046_bbd9_9d8251f416ad_FormControl0').val(ID);

Please help.
