The file is not a valid XML file

I inherited an application that uses Infopath, permitting the use to select a document name.

an existing sharepoint list is used to create xml files for a document owner and document approver (each containing login id, name and email).

this is a browser enabled form, published to it's own site.

was working, now it isn't and i don't have server access to view the log files or make any server level changes. I can only publish forms.

The query cannot be run for teh following DataObject: Document Owner

InfoPath cannot run the specified query

The file is not a valid XML file.

The file cannot be accessed.

i get this error for both the Document Owner and Document Approver xml files.

however, the fields are being populated in the InfoPath form.

how can I troubleshoot this error?
