I hate to be the bearer of sad tidings, but InfoPath just doesn't do this out of the box. You can write code to change your data connection's underlying SQL query prior (and thus incorporate a field value into a where clause in the query) or you can use something like a web service that provides for this type of filtering (as Patrick mentions above, ours does).

Re: Sluggish browser form with SQL data connection

Does anyone have the syntax on how to create a filter in this fashion? I'm also having this delay and I think it's because I'm pulling across thousands of records. There's a button in the data connection setup process where you can view and edit some sql code concerning the connection. I'm guessing I just need to add a "where" statement or something, but don't really know sql code. I think the trick is getting the syntax right (e.g., where INFO PATH VARIABLE = SQL DATABASE VARIABLE). The view I'm looking at already shows the SQL VARIABLE spelling (it is in single-quotes). I tried putting the INFO PATH VARIABLE in single quotes and it rejected my syntax. Can anyone help?

My variables are: SQL = Asset_Tag, and in INFOPATH = Asset_ID

Thanks!

Re: Sluggish browser form with SQL data connection

Well, this is a common predicament. How about a little server side filtering of the data?

Qdabra's DBXL Web Service provides server-side SQL filtering so that you can just download the data your form needs (filtering based on field values in your form). That means you reduce the amount of data you download to your client and realize a huge savings... 15 minutes to install and prototype the free trial version ... yada yada....

Qdabra.com -> Products -> DBXL.... if interested....

Cheerios!

Re: Sluggish browser form with SQL data connection

I'm not sure it would be any better with a rich client form. The root of the problem is the sheer amount of data and the speed of those systems when communicating (network speed, hops, authentication, bandwidth, RAM, processor, etc).

There may be some other way to optimize it for InfoPath, but I don't know of one personally.

Re: Sluggish browser form with SQL data connection

Thank you, so my only other solution is to not use a browser based info path form?

Re: Sluggish browser form with SQL data connection

Just having to pull that much data into the form is going to slow it down regardless.

Re: Sluggish browser form with SQL data connection

Unfortunately a filter is not a very good choice for us - we need our users to be able to choose from all of the items in the database.

I have converted the connection to a udcx in a data connection library for SharePoint. When I open the form it takes about 15-20 seconds to open (pulling the information in upon opening). Even once its open and I select the drop down menu that is using the records it takes that drop down serveral seconds to select the item I want.

We are also getting the error - A script is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly...if we click "yes" to stop the script its opens.

Does anyone know any tricks in making this connection faster?

Thanks in advance.
