For InfoPath forms with a main data connection to a database, InfoPath adds an xdoAdo xml element to the end of your XML payload (the data sent to the database). This element contains original data. InfoPath compares this against what's in the database to prevent from making updates on top of stale data. In other words, InfoPath needs to make sure someone else hasn't changed the database while the form was being edited. If the original data does not match what is in the database, the operation fails with the error:

InfoPath cannot submit the form.
An error occurred while the form was being submitted.
[0x80040E38][Microsoft Cursor Engine] Row cannot be located for updating. Some values may have been changed since it was last read.

There are several reasons why this may have happened:

Another user queried the same data and edited it
InfoPath does not prevent users from querying and modifying the same record simultaneously.

Database process updated the database and changed the rows

Data wasn't properly queried in the first place (and is missing nodes)

During our live meeting session today, we came to the hypothesis that your issue was #3. Your form was previously working correctly. You added grandchildren tables and removed the query on load. Thus the forms are not populating the correct original data and so save/submit is failing. To fix this problem, you can return to querying all data on load.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for contacting us. Your form is quite complex - you have many tables and multiple foreign key relationships. It is difficult to maintain the database mapping for such complex forms and that is a common problem that InfoPath users experience due to limitations in the DB data connection logic. We have developed our Qdabra Database Accelerator Web Service suite to address this pain. You can read more about it here.

We would be happy to help you investigate, and if possible, fix your specific problem. To have us call you and provide live support (via Live Meeting), please purchase a Support-5 package from our sister web site. The link is here.

We look forward to helping you in either way.

Best regards,

Data Connection Errors:

Good morning:

I am in need of some major help! I have a form, that contains sevral tables in the Main Data Conection. For some unknown reason, when the user goes to submit a newly inserted row into a section they get the following error: Unable to find row for updating. From this point forward the form is unusable and must be re-produced.

I need someone to contact me so that my form can be reviewed and review what I have programmed or not programmed that might be causing this error. I also am hoping that the error can be undone so that the form can be usable again. I have followed all of the advise that I have been able to find on the forum.

Please contact me at 800-766-6185 or on my cell 517-256-8263

Thanks!
