I got it working, I added the calculated value rule/formula to the conditional formatting rule that worked perfect, I didn't realize that was possible. Sometimes by InfoPath it is just a matter of trial and error...

Sorry - I didn't attach it! But again, sounds like you may be looking for something a little different - feel free to attach your form under the Options tab.

Yes, you can add a conditional format to a calculated value. I've attached a simple sample. Save it locally, right click the saved file, and select design to open in design mode & preview.

I did a simple condition and that was working correctly. is it even possible to add a conditional format to a calculated value? Is it possible in the Fx field of the calculated value to add a conditional format. ( I think I know that answer, just trying to ruling out ideas)

The only thing I can think of is that the conditional formatting is not set up correctly, i.e. the condition isn't mean matched.

Maybe try a simple condition, to ensure that the color is added, then build your condition as desired.

I need to add a color to a field based on its calculated value. when I add the conditional formatting to the field in IP where the formatting is setup it does not display the color.

The calculated value references/calculates a field in another list that then totals all of those values. I am not into any coding and have searched the web but alas no luck
