You should install Qdabra's Active Directory Web Service and query that for the information. We have a bunch of videos on YouTube that show how to use it. It's cheap and will save you tons of time plus it has cool features not included in UserProfileService - check out Clayton Cobb's "SharePoint Madness" blog on why ADWS is better. The key requirement is that you have a server you can install the Web service too. If you don't have that, you can't install it and the only way to do what you want is to write a bunch of code in your form that calls AD but that will likely require full trust for your web form which will require Admin Deploy which is just as hard as installing the Web service! :) So, hopefully, you can find an IT person to help you install the Web Service. Then, it's easy as pie (ice cream included).

Send us email if you would like to see a quick live demo!

Dear all,

I have designed an infopath form that pull user details from AD. Everything works well for user objects on AD. I use the people picker to select the users, than pass their user name to GetUserProfileByName and then populate the required fields (Name, email, phone, manager etc.)

However, my company has decided that many users who do not need to log on to a computer do not need to have usernames, and those people are added as just contact objects on AD. For these people, there are no associated usernames, so I cannot use the user profile services to retrieve their info. The people picker picks resolves them alright, and the person selector displays their post, title, email etc. My problem is how to pull out these details so I can populate my form with it. I have searched GetUserProfileByGuid but I dont know how to retrieve the GUID without username.

I have also looked at the User Information List using this link http://MySITENAME/_catalogs/users/simple.aspx." but could not see any of the contact names. Searching for the contact names on the sharepoint site also returns nothing. I checked again using the contact selector and it was resolved alright. Is there another place that contact selector/people picker pulls the names from? I thought its pulled from UIL?

If I find the users in the user information list, and make a data connection to it, then I will only query it when needed and that is only when a contact user is selected which is about <5% of the time so am hoping it will work for me.

In a nutshell, I am looking for a way to query AD directly using the Display name of the selected user (as resolved by people picker) and retrieve their title, department and email address without using UserProfileService. I wish I can afford QDabraAD but I can't.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Regards,

Lucy.

PS: I am designing in Infopath 2010 but publishing as sharepoint 2007 webform.
