Found a workaround. The request was more urgent than originally thought.

The static columns were placed in a repeating section, which also held a repeating table for the columns I wanted to repeat.

Bit of a bizarre question, but it has a reason :)

I'll try and explain what the user is after:

The user wants to have a (browser form) where others can add Units of a course (which would be rows) and columns for students on that course (columns).

It would look something like this:

From Student1 onwards would be repeating columns.
