Sections turned into optional sections after edit, save, publish

Hi All,

I am using 3 x people picker (contact selector) controls at the top of my form. When people enter the contact and move to the next field the form refreshes (flashes, reloads). A post from Anson suggested breaking your form into multiple views and organizing your fields to limit postback per view (I am paraphrasing) to reduce this flashing (irritating on slow computers) experience.

I copied the top table in my form and pasted it into another view, I then added a button and rules to my new view. The rules would create value in the "filename" field (that I use with save and submit), save the form and change the view to my original view. I figured this would reduce flashing and it would get me started on chunking up the form in to multiple views that save as the person progresses through the form (since people can take longer that 30 minutes to fill it out).

I ended up with a bunch of validation errors and all my sections turned into optional sections. I don't want optional sections. So my questions are:

What is an easy way of turning my optional sections back into sections?
Why did this happen?
What strategies do you employ to keep versions of your form templates so you can revert back to a previous version?
