I'm sorry - I really can't think of much else. In case it is any help - my basic troubleshooting involves first narrowing down if it is the user or the machine - have the user log into a machine where things work - does s/he still have the issue? Log into the user's machine - still have the issue?

You'd mentioned deleting and recreating the user's profile cleared this up - but for how long?

Re: Existing form not saving to SharePoint.
I've tried clearing the cache: InfoPath /cache clearall

I also opened InfoPath and deleted the existing forms... which I imagine does the same thing.

Re: Existing form not saving to SharePoint.
Their OS is XP and IE is 8. Same settings.

My only thought is that when they to open a link, a browser version of the form opens first and immediately locks the record before the IP form opens.

Re: Existing form not saving to SharePoint. Do all IP forms open as Read Only for all of these users? If they created the original XML, do they still have the issue? IE settings the same for all users?

Re: Existing form not saving to SharePoint.
The user has full control of the document library and everyone has Read access to the content type form.
