Layout aside .. I am still not even sure how that relationship would be described in XML schema... probably it can't and you'd need to have an independent repeating group as a field within the parent group.

Re: Table that repeats both horizontal and vertically.

Sounds like an Excel solution. While you say it's a nightmare to manage due to the data relationships, doing it in InfoPath (which is theoretically possible) would be a nightmare to manage the layout...

Table that repeats both horizontal and vertically.

Quite simply - I want to record a few fields for each record (Name, Position, Room #) .. and then for each person I want to be able to allow the user to add a date and check a checkbox as to whether the person was present on this day.

Formatting aside - I can't even figure out how you'd represent this data relationship in the data source.

So essentially like this:

Name

Position

Room #

1-Jan-2011

2-Jan-2011

<>

(I have a table above, it appears in the preview but not the final message) Essentially the table is:

Name Position Room 1-Jan-2011 2-Jan-2011
John Doe Manager 305 X
John Adams Clerk 210 X X

If the user were to add a new person, the existing dates would appear for the new person. If the user added a new date, it would add a new date to all people. If they deleted a date, it would delete a date for all people. Not 100% necessary, but if the dates section could scroll horizontally that'd also be bonus.

I know this design is horrible. Maybe infopath is not the best tool for this. Access can't do repeating controls. Excel is a nightmare to manage due to lack of data relationships. My deliverable is to print a list like the above, indicating the dates each person will be present. I played around with having the user enter date ranges instead and then use expression boxes to display the checked / unchecked - but it seemed way harder than simply letting the user add the dates in arbitrarily.
