I have managed similar migrations from Access User Interfaces to InfoPath and the user experience is much improved as well as the development is much easier and the UI capabilities much greater.

You would need to look at your from design and how many views or layouts you would need for your users to complete the process. Then you would need to look at how the information would move in and out of the form. Finally how the information gets from the Tablet PC to your back end systems or other users.

Do the tablets have internet and interact with the data in real-time or do they sync up periodically?

This may be a great fit for the DBXL application if you have access to SQL and is very similar to some of our other customers using it for mobile inspectors, etc. You can have Building images right in your form and mark on them with ink from your tablet as well as using drop downs or fields to collect addditional information.

Email me if you need more information or want to discuss this further.

Need some advice on implementation

I'm new to InfoPath, but it looks like it may be the right solution for what I'm needing to do. I have an Access 2003 database that I need to get data into. The data will be collected by people using tablet PCs out in the field, and it needs to get imported into the database. That sounds like what InfoPath can do. The thing I'm trying to figure out about it is how to set up the forms to handle the database schema I have.

I have a table for building information, and that table has a one-to-many relationship with a Device table. Now the device information isn't so simple that it can be entered in a grid or subform format I don't think. It will probably require a form of its own, complete with the ability for the user to sketch a little picture of the device if necessary, and a fair amount of logic involved in automating and validating the information that they are entering.

So, I guess my question is this, how easy is it to create a form for entering building information, and then having the user be able to click a button (or some other method) to add a new device to the building and have the device form open up to let them enter that info and still have it tied back to the building via a BuildingID field? So that they can just keep clicking that "add device" button and keep adding more devices. Would there be any issues with getting the data back into the database? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

- Kris
