To modify a form template without overwriting the published form template, open the published form template and use the Save As command to save a copy of the form template. After modifying and updating the copy of the form template, you can publish it to the original location where it was published. Because InfoPath determines the identity of a form template based on its name and location, it is important not to change these when you republish the form template.

If you want to update the location of a published form template, you have to open it in InfoPath, and then republish the form template to the new location. If you do not use InfoPath when you move a published form template to a new location, you can cause errors that prevent users from opening new or existing forms based on that template.

BTW:
If you want to update the data source information in your form when the source schema changes I would recommend to read the following article first:

<a href='http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/ipsdk/html/ipsdkRoundTripDevelopment_HV01083661.asp' target='_blank' title='http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/ipsdk/html/ipsdkRoundTripDevelopment_HV01083661.asp'http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/ipsdk/html/ipsdkRoundTripDevelopment_HV01083661.asp

HTH,
Re: Versionizing Infopath forms

Hi Millie

InfoPath has built-in Upgrade features. If you use the InfoPath designer to develop your data source (schema), etc, it will even account for fields that have been added, etc.

You need to do in the following to upgrade version automatically.

open form in Designer mode and then Go to Forms ->'Tool Options' and on the 'Advanced ' tab, select 'automatically upgrade existing form' value from "On Version Upgared drop down box in "Form Template version" section
Click 'Ok' and save the form
Versionizing Infopath forms

hi
I want to use Infopath forms in my work, but now I was warned by a professional programmer that I will get problems with the versions of the forms, he won´t ever use Infopath because of this.
Now I am confused about what to do?
I have following facts:
a Infopath template will be stored on a exchange file. Then the user will copiy this template and edit it, this also means getting connected to the database and get data. They will store it on their local machines. Then they will finish the form, which means storing back data to sql database. Thats it. The form will rest on their pc.
What I didn´t understand: why there will be a problem when I change the template then?

Can someone help me understanding this?

Thanks, Milli
