My personal preference is to always use a webservice and never connect directly to SQL Server, etc. But if you are new start with making a connection and slowly build your way up to using a webserice.

Check out labs 8 and 9 for more information -http://www.infopathdev.com/resources/labs/default.aspx

Re: Infopath as a Timecard System

Actually, InfoPath ships with two sample forms just like this. In InfoPath, click File -> Design a Form, then choose Customize a Sample from the task pane. If you scroll down in the list of sample forms you will see both a Time Card (simple) and a Time Card (detailed). If you use these as your starting point and only require a few changes it should be relatively easy to link the form to your own database and start storing Time Cards. If you require huge changes in the design of the form, it might become a little more difficult, but it shouldn't be too bad!

Hope this helps, let us know if you need anything else.

---------------
Matt Faus
InfoPath Dev Texas
Infopath as a Timecard System

I have a request from one of our IT people to set up InfoPath on Sharepoint to use as a timecard system. I would assume that he wants people to access the timecard form out of Sharepoint and have the data sent back to a database on Submit. Has anyone ever done this? It sounds simple, but maybe I just don't understand InfoPath well enough to know how difficult it is. Any help you can give is appreciated.

~If you don't have time to do it right the first time, when will you have time to fix it?~
